Executive Chef and Instructor at Lakeland Correctional Facility

Chef Jimmy Lee Hill has dedicated 32 years to improving education inside of Michigan’s Correctional System. When Chef arrived at the Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater, the program was a simple cooking class without textbooks. Today the program is robust using industry-recognized curriculums and certifications, including the Foundations of Restaurant Management & Culinary Arts Level 1 and Level 2, ServSafe Food Manager, and the AHLEI, Start Program.

The documentary created by Brian Kaufman premiered November of 2022, COLDWATER KITCHEN is a timely film that comes as the national conversation around the criminal justice system — which touches 1 out of 3 Americans — has begun to shift, moving from punishment to habilitation and into an area where there may be rare bi-partisan support for reforms. COLDWATER KITCHEN was awarded the 2023 James Beard Media winner for documentaries. COLDWATER KITCHEN was an Award Winner of the Miller/Packan Documentary Film Fund for Winter 2021  and made its world premiere at the prestigious DOC NYC film festival.
